What If...... Captain American was never frozen?

Everyone loves Captain America. The story of the hero of World War 2,  who was frozen in a block of ice. Only to be awoken decades later in a time of need. What would the world be like if he were never frozen? Would H.Y.D.R.A destroy S.H.I.E.L.D from the inside? What would have be his place in the decades  leading up to the twentieth century? We can only guess. Here is a short tale of what might have happened, if Captain America was never frozen in ice.

The day was saved. The Red Skull was no more, and H.Y.D.R.A was defeated. As Captain America pilots the ship filled with bombs towards the ocean, he talks to his love Peggy Carter, one last time. As the ship hits the water, he loses the connection, and suddenly is knocked unconscious. Luckily for him, Howard Stark was able to get a group together fast enough, and was able to predict the ships crash site. Within seconds, Captain America was recovered from the wreckage, and put on a helicopter bound for the nearest hospital.
“Where am I?” Captain America asks as he wakes up. Nobody is in his room, so he raises his voice a little. “Hello?!” He yells out, hoping to get someone’s attention. It takes a few more seconds until someone runs into the room. “Hello there Mr. Rogers” The doctor says “My name is Dr. Stein, and you are very lucky to be with us.” “What do you mean? What happened?” Rogers asks. “ According to the official reports, you crash landed the Red Skull’s ship in the North Atlantic. You would have died, it not for Mr. Stark who was able to get you onto his ship before you went to far deep into the water. You most likely would have died, but there was always the possibility of you being cryogenically frozen. But the chance of that happening was slim” the doctor answered. “You have been out for nearly 2 weeks” the doctor continued “ I have done my best to keep the press out, and you have had a stream of visitors as well. One of which is waiting right outside”. “What? Who is it?” Rogers asked, having an idea of who it could be. “I’ll let her in so you can see” the doctor says as he walks out.
A few seconds later, Peggy Carter slowly walks in.  “Hey” She says quietly. “Hey yourself” Rogers replies, “What’s a lovely lady like you, doing in a place like this?” “Just visiting someone special. Someone who still owes me a dance” she answered. “Well, as soon as I’m out of here, you will have your dance” he replied. “Oh Steve, I thought I lost you” Carter says as tears start to form in her eyes. “Well you didn’t, and now I’m here to stay”.
Over the years, Captain America became a legendary figure. He would speak at various events around the world, and help out during wartime. When the USA was at peace, he would spend his days at home with Peggy Carter. With him on her side, The USA was an even bigger force to be reckoned with.  The Vietnam War was won very quickly, thanks to Captain America’s involvement. As one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D, Steve Rogers made sure to hunt down every last member of H.Y.D.R.A. But as much as he tried, there were always more agents hiding in the shadows, waiting for him to let his guard down. Cut off one head, and another shall grow in it's place is what they would always yell at his face. Unfortunately for them, Captain America never let his guard down, so they were always on the run.
Some politicians even asked if he would run for president. He was such a figure of influence, they knew that the people of the USA would follow and support him. As much as they asked him, he would always turned them down. Captain America always felt more comfortable from behind the scenes, always helping those in need and not needing all of the recognition. Whoever was elected president, he would always have the support of Captain America.
When the Avengers were founded, Captain America was immediately asked to lead them. Only he was able to handle and lead all of these super powered beings into a cohesive unit. He led them without conflict or strife, and with no secrets. The team would change over the years, but it was always the good Captain who was leading them.

  1. Wouldn't it have affected Cap deeply seeing his lover grow old and develop dementia? Wouldn't a figure like Cap disagree with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Or the induction of morally reprehensible scientists? Just a few points, but otherwise I enjoyed your sweet short story.
