Batman: Monitor of the Multiverse

I have already written two posts about what would happen if Krypton never blew up. The first one included a character that hinted at Batman. But how did such a character even end up on that planet? A planet light years away from Earth, when Earth has no interplanetary travel capabilities. I decided to write a little spin-off that explained it. Hope you like it.

It was just another normal night in the Batcave. Batman had just returned from dropping the Joker off at Arkham Asylum, and now it was time to do some research on a past case. “Alfred, can you come here for a second?” He called out to his trusty butler as he removes his cowl from his face. A few minutes went by, and no sign of Alfred. “Alfred? Is something wrong?” he asked before he realized, that something was definitely wrong. It was like time was standing still, but he was immune to whatever was going on.  All of a sudden, he had a bad feeling that someone was behind him.

“Do not be alarmed” said a mysterious voice behind him. Batman turned around and came face to face with an otherworldly looking individual. “Who are you, and what are you doing here?” Batman asked quickly.  “I do not have a name, but you may call me The Monitor. I am one of many who safeguard the multiverse, and all who live in it.” He answered. “And you are telling me this, why?” Batman asked. “Because we are few, and now that the multiverse has been reborn, we need more in our ranks” The Monitor replied. “I have been watching you and you seem qualified to join our ranks.”

“First off” Batman started “I know of the monitors, and I don’t seem to understand why they would allow a human to join their ranks. And second, why would I ever join? To leave my home, friends and family behind does not seem worth it to be able to watch them for all time”. “We have observed you for a while, and you seem to be different than most humans. You want to help others from behind the scenes, and when lives are on the line, you will do whatever needs to be done to save them” The Monitor responds. “As for why you would join us, you would not only be protecting your friends and family in this reality, but in all realities. And as a bonus, we would let you come back to this reality when you want to, but then, you would not be a monitor anymore.” “So this would be temporary? Why?” Batman asks. “Because we need help. Because the multiverse is out of balance and we fear that there is a danger out there worse than any that has come before. And we need to find it.” Fine. Lets go” Batman responds, as he stands up and pulls his cowl over his head.

With a snap of his fingers, The Monitor transports them to The Multiverse Nexus. At the Nexus, the Monitors are able to view any reality that they want, and protect the ones that are in danger of being wiped out. The Monitor brought Batman to his station, and told him the main rule of his responsibility. “You are only to interfere in a reality if it is in danger of being wiped out. There is no other reason to do so. Good Luck, and trust your judgment” The Monitor says as he walks away.

“Wow” he thought. “An infinite number of realities, all with different versions of me, and the rest of the league. "Time to do some snooping”. He then spends time looking through universes, making sure they are safe, and interfering when necessary. He is amazed at the different universes that he sees. There was even a universe where Ben Affleck was playing him in a movie. As he is looking, he comes across a reality that he hadn’t noticed before. “Hmmmm. This is interesting” he thought. Even though it wasn’t reality threatening, he decided to look into fixing what he perceived as a problem. It is why the Monitors gave him this responsibility, to perceive potential problems to various realities.  With a snap of his fingers, he was sitting on a sidewalk, in disguise as a homeless man. He is waiting for a few minutes before he sees who he is looking for. A young boy with an aura of confidence surrounding him is walking by. “Hey you!” he calls out to a young Kal-El.

After a few minutes, Kal-El walks away, with hopefully a new outlook on life. Before he is able to turn around to ask more, Batman disappears, and is back at The Nexus. He is able to watch Kal-El turn around, and has the satisfaction of seeing Kal look confused by his hand, just as he is used to seeing. And now, along with his other duties, Batman was pleased that he would be able to monitor how Kal would be doing in this reality.
