What if... Krypton never Blew Up (Part 2)

The first story that I wrote about was a what if story about a possible outcome if the planet Krypton never blew up. I had an idea for a continuation of it, so I decided to write it out. This one takes place shortly after the first story I wrote. If you did not read it, you can find it here.

It was a wonderful day for young Kal-El. In truth, all days had been wonderful recently, ever since he met the mysterious man, and changed his ways. He left his old friends; right before they were all caught and arrested for robbery, and even attempted murder. Apparently, the robbery was only the first part of their plan, and they had failed to share the second part with Kal. The authorities questioned Kal extensively, but he was let go because he seemed genuine when he explained that he was not there at the time of the crime, and that he wanted to turn his life around. He was then sent home to the care of his parents, who could not be happier that he was changing his life.
“If he could do it, then perhaps I can too” Said his father Jor-El, after learning of his son’s decision. For the next few weeks, Jor-El dedicated himself to his work. He quit his job as being a janitor, and went back to work. He rarely left his lab as he worked on his next big finding or invention. After a few weeks he had it, in the form of a plant that would pretty much plant itself over and over. He brought it before the scientific community, and was praised for it. With his father turning his life around by helping others, Kal decided to do the same.
Wherever there was an opportunity to help someone, Kal was there. Whether it would be to help a girl who had lost her parents in a store, or to assist the elderly, he was doing it all, and doing it with a smile. One night when he was heading home from doing his good deeds, he notices some people that are attempting to break into a store. Kal quietly approached them, and listened as the two criminals argued. “What are you doing? You are going to set the alarm off, and the police will be here in no time at all!” One of them told the other. “Will you shut up?” The second one asked, “I know what I am doing, and we will be fine”. Kal decided to call for help. He quickly contacted the authorities, but they said it would be a few minutes before they got there. Kal decided to act on his own, just in case they did not make it on time. He grabbed a piece of pipe lying by the trash, and made his decision. He snuck up behind the criminals, and swung the pipe with all his might. He hit the first one in the back of the head, knocking him down instantly. “What the…” The other one started, before being knocked down as well. Kal could hear the sirens approaching, so he decided to make his getaway before anyone knew he was there.
“That felt amazing” Kal thought as he got home. The thrill of defeating the bad guys, and being the mysterious hero lit up young Kal’s eyes and imagination. He decided that he wanted to continue to do it. But he would need a disguise so he would not be recognized. All of the heroes that he had read about had symbols to fight behind. There was the legendary Nightwing and Flamebird, who were Kal’s favorites story heroes growing up, so for that reason he decided to try and be like them. Over the next several weeks, he put together a rudimentary outfit with some protection, and spots for some weapons. When it was done, all he had to figure out was what symbol to use, and what to call himself. He couldn’t use his family’s crest, for that would be to obvious. Suddenly, a bat flew into the room from an open window, and perched itself by Kal’s desk. “Maybe I can be some sort of bat creature to scare villains” he thought. After a few seconds, he decided against it. He thought it would be stupid to base an entire symbol on a creature that flew into his room.

“The El family is big enough, and Krypton has many families on it. Maybe nobody will think it is me right away” Kal thought quickly. He decided to use his family's seal, but with a few modifications on it. Now all that was left to do, was to come up with a name. “The mysterious man spoke about a hero known as Superman, but he also implied that I was connected to him somehow” Kal thought, “Maybe I can be a younger Superman”. And with that, Superboy of Krypton was born.
